Supporting the UK’s national Public Design Review

Policy Lab workshop, December, 2014

Fieldstudio has delivered the literature review forming part of the UK’s first national Public Design Review taking place in late 2023 and early 2024 led by the cross-government Policy Design Community. This analysis of existing literature is one key component of a review of the use and extent and impact of design across government in the UK, alongside a survey, development of a ‘return on investment’ model, case studies and interviews.

An experienced and interdisciplinary team of researchers from five leading UK universities carried out the work which was awarded to Fieldstudio:

Lucy Kimbell, Professor of Contemporary Design Practices at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London

Catherine Durose, Professor of Public Policy, and Co-Director of the Heseltine Institute for Public Policy, Practice and Place at the University of Liverpool

Iacopo Gronchi, PhD candidate, Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, University College London

Rainer Kattel, Professor of Innovation and Public Governance and Deputy Director of the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, University College London

Charlie Mealings, PhD candidate and Adjunct Lecturer, Department of Political Economy, Kings College London

Liz Richardson, Professor of Public Administration, Department of Politics, University of Manchester

The team’s analysis informed the other activities in the Public Design Review. A public version of the literature review is expected to be published by the Civil Service in early March 2024.
